Brooklyn is the new… London?

When we first hear the word “BoCoCa” we never expected it to show up across the pond in the Telegraph — but there it is. Brits are flocking to Brooklyn, buying brownstones that are only slightly more expensive than a London studio. Whoa. The article also cites the sterilization of Manhattan culture as a reason buyers prefer Brooklyn’s small shops and restaurants.  It seems that we’re exporting some Brooklyn too–Junior’s cheesecake has inked a deal to be distributed in Britain.

A proposal is out to create ground-floor retail at the stolid Brooklyn Muncipal Building. This would be a great way to bring some vitality to that block while adding some needed services to the area. Brownstoner has the details — and the local community board has been known to read the comments over there, so surf on over and post your opinion.

UPDATE: Curbed has a very nice rendering.

200 Livingston Getting its Cladding

The quiet but impressive tower going up at 200 Livingston (a.k.a. 189 Schermerhorn) is taking on its final character, a modern, silvery-grey look that is pleasingly similar to the project’s rendering. Meanwhile, the developer’s website has dubbed the project “Be@Schermerhorn”–an odd choice, we think, especially since it translates into the following aggressive-sounding url: beatschermerhorn.com (not online yet). We prefer the classy-sounding 200 Livingston, for the record.

This building’s 214 condos will have “state-of-the-art fitness room, lounge, screening room, public terrace, planted courtyard, private roof terraces, bicycle room and private laundry facilities all serviced by wireless internet.” Sounds pretty nice.
