NYU Takes (Part of) Livingston Street, and Possibly Brooklyn Poly

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Hello to 110′s new neighbor, NYU. The university has leased dormitory space just down the block at 67 Livingston, the sliver building adjacent to the wedding-cake 75 Livingston. Also, NYU and Brooklyn Polytechnic have recommenced merger talks. In 1973, NYU shut down its engineering school, and many of its professors migrated over to Brooklyn Poly, the second oldest engineering school in the country. Merger talks stalled a couple years ago, but optimistic press releases from both schools suggest that now there’s a will, so there will be a way. Under the plan as proposed, Poly would become the Polytechnic Institute of NYU. Will the torch replace the Chase symbol over Metrotech?

I Will be Your Öko Yono

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

Dear Öko,

I have never felt this way about fro-yo before, but I’m going to say it here and now for all the world to see: I love you. I love your tangy Greek frozen yogurt. I love your perfectly-diced strawberries. I love your sunflower seed countertops and your eco-cool vibe. I love those little baby cactuses on the shelf. But there is one thing I don’t love: the distance between us.

Öko, why are you so far away? You should be in Downtown Brooklyn. We need you desperately. Please, please open a store in our neighborhood! Park Slope isn’t close enough. I always come to you; it’s time for you to start coming to me. Don’t let our summer romance end when the chill of fall hits the air. Claim one of those cozy, empty storefronts on Court Street, and let’s settle in together for the winter. I’ll be waiting.

All my love,

Jenny

P.S. There is one more thing we need to talk about. You know how sometimes in a relationship as things start getting more comfortable, you sometimes stop trying so hard to impress? I have to be honest, those new corn spoons – they’re a little frumpy. Too plasticy, too sharp. You can leave those crummy corn spoons in Park Slope. Bring the potato spoons to Downtown Brooklyn!

110 Livingston Gets 98% Walkability Seal of Approval

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

walk Thanks to our neighbors at 53 Boerum for tipping us off to the cool Walk Score site — it rates neighborhoods for “walkability” by calculating an address’ proximity to essentials like groceries, parks, bookstores, and so forth. 110 scores 98%, at the high end of the “Walker’s Paradise” range, between 90 and 100. Our only question is why we’re not at 100, what with our on-site museum.

Some benefits of walkable neighborhoods, according to the site: fewer greenhouse gases, healthier lifestyle, support for local businesses, and stronger social fabric. Sounds good to us. Plus shorter trip to pick up milk. Check out the link below and watch the site tally all the local amenities.
