Boerum Place Sidewalk Improvements Outlined

The mysterious fluorescent-orange outline above represents a welcome improvement to the street crossings along Boerum Place. These planned curb-widenings at intersections are known as “neck downs,” and are just some of the 100 such traffic calming measures slated for the Downtown Brooklyn area.

By creating extra sidewalk real estate, the extensions will make the street crossings shorter for pedestrians, and serve as a visual cue to drivers to slow down because a crosswalk is present. More grainy shots after jump.

The complete plans for Boerum Place, in DOT’s words, are as follows:

Boerum Place (Downtown) Streetscape Project

DOT has worked closely with the New York City Economic Development Corporation on a streetscape project that will improve the street’s design and operation. The project extends from Fulton Street to Atlantic Avenue and will extend the planted median on Adams Street. Input from local stakeholders shaped the project’s design goals which will result in a street that works better for all users – motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. The project will:

  • widen and landscape the center median,
  • improve turning alignments,
  • provide protected turning bays,
  • increase pedestrian refuge space at the median
  • increase sidewalk widths at intersections,
  • add a new, second traffic island to aid pedestrians and motorists at the intersection with Atlantic Avenue; and
  • provide bicycle lanes in both directions

  2. It’s more than traffic calming. The whole street is being reconstructed, with a planted median similar to the one north of Joralemon Street.

  3. Now if they’d just crack down on the damn honking at the turn from Atlantic onto Boerum by rescinding the right turn on red privilege and figure out some way to make it non-life-threatening to cross Atlantic on the East side of Boerum Place.
